“Losing weight is simple: eat less and exercise more! Managing household finances is equally simple: ‘work hard and watch your spending.’ R-i-g-h-t! We all know that there’s more to it. The missing ingredient in both cases is a practical, individually tailored action plan.”
Bruce always puts his clients first. He truly listens to his clients to uncover what’s really important to them—creating a sense of trust and ease that leads to financial confidence and success.
Bruce worked in traditional financial services and financial planning for over 25 years. During this time—despite the increasing profile of financial planning and regardless of the compensation model—Bruce’s remuneration was always ultimately determined by product sales. He became increasingly frustrated by this product focus, because he knew it was detracting from the financial planning process. Financial planning is about individualizing plans for client-driven decisions, which leads to the right products being recommended for the right reasons. Real solutions don’t come from financial planners being pressured to sell clients the product “flavour of the month.”
These beliefs and experiences led Bruce to discover the concept of fee-for-service financial planning—something that has become very popular in other parts of Canada, but is not yet well known in Saskatchewan. After carefully considering his options for delivering fee-for-service financial planning to Regina and area, Bruce concluded that Money Coaches Canada offered numerous benefits to both himself and his clients, and made the decision to become an associate.
Just what we wanted from a fee-based financial planner
I recently retired and I was unsure about how much income we could realistically expect to generate from our RRSPs and my pension fund, and the process required to start the income flowing. I was also particularly concerned about how to avoid paying too much income tax on our retirement income. I knew that we could use some professional guidance but we didn’t want advice from someone who needed to sell us something in order to get paid, so we decided to hire a fee-for-service financial planner.
After gathering all of our information and taking the time to listen to our goals for our retirement, Bruce provided us with a well-thought-out financial plan. The plan included excellent tax advice that resulted in much greater tax savings than we would have if I had continued on in the direction I had in mind to go. In fact, the elimination of my OAS clawback, alone, saved me more than the fee we paid for the plan! Through the process, Bruce directed our attention to important issues that we had not always understood the importance of, and referred us to someone that helped us get our affairs in order.
Our financial plan provides us with a clear sense of how much we can spend during our retirement, and, most importantly, it includes a clear, detailed, chronological list of actions required to implement our plan. This was just what we wanted from a fee-based financial planner: a trusted adviser who would provide us with unbiased, practical guidance, so we could focus our energy on enjoying our retirement.
To continue receiving Bruce’s guidance, and to keep us on track, we’ve chosen to continue working with Bruce on an ongoing basis.

Now I feel in control of my money
I used to avoid looking at my account balances online because it was depressing.
Before I started working with Bruce, I was living paycheque to paycheque and I didn’t know where all of my money was going. I didn’t really think that Bruce would be able to change anything.
Now I feel in control of my money and I actually enjoy banking online and seeing my savings build-up. In the first two months, I reached three of my short-term goals! It’s awesome! I can’t really explain why, but their system just works!
